Gate Valves
Gate Valves are widely used industrial valves designed to control the flow of liquids and gases in pipelines. These valves operate by lifting or lowering a gate-like disc inside the valve body to start or stop the flow of fluid. Gate valves are mainly used for on/off flow control rather than regulating the flow. Due to their reliable sealing capability and simple design, they are commonly used in industries such as water supply, oil & gas, power plants, chemical processing, and manufacturing plants.
The working principle of a gate valve is simple. When the handwheel or actuator is turned, the gate inside the valve moves up or down along the stem. When the gate is fully lifted, the valve opens completely and allows fluid to pass through with minimal resistance. When the gate is lowered, it blocks the flow path completely, ensuring tight shut-off and preventing leakage.
Gate valves are available in different types such as rising stem gate valves, non-rising stem gate valves, wedge gate valves, and parallel gate valves. Rising stem valves provide a visible indication of valve position, while non-rising stem valves are more compact and suitable for underground or limited-space installations.
These valves are manufactured using strong materials like cast iron, ductile iron, stainless steel, brass, and bronze, making them suitable for handling high pressure and temperature conditions. They are also designed to provide a straight flow path, which reduces pressure loss in the pipeline.
Gate valves are preferred for applications where full flow is required and minimal pressure drop is important. They are commonly installed in water distribution systems, fire protection systems, industrial pipelines, and irrigation networks. Their durability, excellent sealing performance, and ability to handle large volumes of fluid make gate valves an essential component in many industrial and commercial piping systems. Proper installation and regular maintenance ensure long service life and efficient performance.
